Balliol College is a thriving academic community in the heart of Oxford. It exists to advance education at both undergraduate and graduate levels, to facilitate and to encourage scholarship and research at the very highest levels, and to promote excellence in learning, as one of the colleges within the University of Oxford. Founded in 1263, Balliol is one of Oxford’s oldest colleges; the oldest academic institution in the English-speaking world still on its original site; and almost certainly the oldest co-founded by a woman anywhere. It is also one of Oxford’s largest colleges. Led by the Master, the community consists of about 70 Fellows. Many of these are Tutorial Fellows who, with the College Lecturers, teach around 370 undergraduate students; about the same number of students read for graduate degrees. There are also about 120 non-academic staff. The College is run by those Fellows who form its Governing Body, through a system of committees composed of Fellows, students and staff.
Position available: Junior Research Fellow
Candidate profile:
- The College proposes to elect a non-stipendiary Junior Research Fellow in a Science subject from 1st October, 2016. Eligible subjects are Mathematics, Medicine, and Physical/Life Sciences other than Engineering.
- The Fellowship is a three-year fixed-term position, and successful applicants should normally – at the time of taking up their Fellowship – have funding in place for the duration of the Fellowship and be in possession of a doctorate.
- The College especially encourages applications from those who have not yet had a comparable college-linked position. The Fellowship is a non-governing body position, that is, the post-holder will not be a Trustee of the College, and in its current Statutes will be elected to a Supernumerary Fellowship.
Key responsibilities:
The main duty of the Fellow will be to undertake research, but participation in the educational activities of the College, including, if desired, a small amount of paid tutorial teaching, would be welcomed.
Benefits:
Single College accommodation is offered, where available (or, if preferred, a housing allowance of (currently) £5,465 p.a.), as well as free meals and an academic support allowance.
Points Requirement :
Any offer of employment will be subject to the provision of an original document which indicates the holder’s right to work in the UK. All candidates invited for interview will be required to provide this evidence when attending for interview. Applicants who would need a work visa in order to take up employment in the UK are asked to note that, under the UK’s points-based migration system, they will need to demonstrate that they have sufficient points, and in particular that:
(i) they have sufficient English language skills (evidenced by having passed a test in basic English, or coming from a majority English-speaking country, or having taken a degree taught in English) and
(ii) that they have sufficient funds to maintain themselves and any dependants.
